Great job Gary! I built a 16' Burkley Can-du-ez tug several years ago so I have an appreciation of the effort you have invested in Miss Rebecca. I retired recently and am looking for a boat building project. Jack Tar is a great design and Arch is a great guy to work with. I volunteer at a youth boat building program in nearby Hartford, CT and we have built several of Arch's boats. Enjoy your boat-I envy you the ability to work outside all year 'round. In New England we have to build a heatable shelter to work through the cold weather. Best regards and happy holidays to you and yours. Doug Crocker

Merry X-mas and Happy New Year. Hi Gary, your new video its great and she looks nice in black. Finally I got my J/Tar Plans, but decide to build something a little diferent.I did a mix from J/Tar + Pearson 38 + Frost Torpedo(Rumerys's)+ some experience. It's 65% done on strong durable tropical woods on the traditional way. Please write me back with your new e-mail, so I send you a few pictures from my project. You may like it. Goodness, just when I was looking for help, God made it possible for me to meet you. Congratulations! You have done a very wondeful job. Now, I have someone to ask all the quesitons when I am stuck. Thanks to God. I am going to start building this boat in Liberia, West Africa this year by God's grace. I have been looking for someone who has built one of this boat. My prayer has been answered. Is it possible I can purchase all the set of videos from stem to finish? I need some guidance in Africa. Our fishermen are using canoe to fish at sea. It is very dangerous for them. I am trying to convince the government and other international organizations to help finance my projects to build more of this boat. Please is it possible I can get these videos from you? The Lord God be with you. Neigon Baa Kalakpa Togoan

Gary, wow! I have always admired the lobsterboats of the east. It would make a great boat for up here on the Columbia and crossing the bar for Salmon! Im afraid to ask how much money you spent becasue I know fom experiance that its the labor that out weighs the money. This hull must feel firm in chop and heavy waves. Please write if you have time. I must say you did VERY GOOD work on the Rebecca. My Grandfather was a master boat builder in south Louisiana all of his life. My family still owns the last boat he started (A 48') I say started because he passed away before it was finished. My great uncle (his brother) and some other family and friends finished the boat and launched it on May 15th 1978, I was only twelve years old. But I can remember thinking "THAT'S A BIG BOAT" as I watched it slide into the water. It is now in a slip in Gulfport harbor in Gulfport Mississippi. Somewhere between my grandfaters death and my father the art of building is being lost. But for the past few years I have been pulled more and more into continuing his craft. I have built sevral small (16' to 18') skiffs. But I am in the process of starting a much bigger project. I guess it is something that is in my blood that is just now starting to show it's self. But seeing your progress on you project just add's fuel to the fire. As you said Landing on a island with a boat that you built yourself give's one a felling that has no comparison! Once again, You did a VERY good job on the rebecca, and I know that you are very proud of her! Hope she brings you and your family many years of enjoyment. She is a goodlooking family jewel! J.B. Brice Hattiesburg, Ms.

I previously signed in your log on 5-5-03. I am seriously interested in a trailerable lobster boat. I've looked at larger designs, but they're not trailerable. Ever since I saw your "Miss Rebecca" project, I've been trying to get an email to you, without success. I'm curious as to how she handles in rough sea. I do a fair amount of ocean fishing and it can rough out there at times. The area I'd be fishing in would be out the Golden Gate to the Farallon Islands and down the coast from north of Fort Bragg to about the area of Morro Bay. I'd sure be interested in hearing of your experiences with Miss Rebecca. Best regards, Dean

Thanks for the Ibuprofen, guys. It made the day a lot easier. Right after watching you prettily power out of Emerald Bay we headed out for a lovely sail back to Del Rey. Chip's happy to be back on dry land. The web site is great. It was fun to see after admiring the boat. I knew Arch Davis' name from Wooden Boat (I owned a Kettenberg PC for years and grew up sailing wooden C and E-Scows in the Midwest)and had seen pictures of his designs but it's always a pleasure to see one floating, and fascinating to see the beauty of the put-together. Congratulations. I'm including a site for a fellow I met up in Scorpion Harbor, Santa Cruz, two years ago. Another home-builder with a very sweet sailing little boat. http://www.amateurboatbuilding.com/ProjectJustRight/index.htm And I'm forwarding your site both to my 88 year-old-father who built a 40 foot scow houseboat for the Mississippi in Rock Island, Illinois in 1950-51, and to my oldest friend, a denizen of the Northeast, who's looking for a good boat for his fishing forays off Marblehead. Thanks again for the conversation and the pain relief, John Getz

The boat is beautiful, I have seen many of this similar type of boat here in Galveston Bay. My question is, can she be modified to hold a pair of 4-stroke outboards. I love to fish offshore and I think I would be better off with an extra engine. Once again Miss Rebecca is fantastic and I bet you guys really enjoy her. Nice job on the construction and the workmanship. Nobody takes the time any more for projects like this. Thank You

Such a beautiful boat! And, as it seems from the photos, you've done a wonderful job building it too! And, as if that was not enough, your deserve credit for the web-site too! Do you know how many hours (estimated) it took you to build this boat from start to launching day? How powerful (hp) is your engine and what's the cruising speed with that engine? How does the boat behave in heavy seas? I'd be happy to recieve any info on these subjects! Best wishes from Norway! Ulf S

I enjoyed the photos of the building of the Jack Tar design. Do you have any of the Jiffy 22? The Jiffy 22 is very similar to a small lobster boat I saw of the Discovery Channel's show, "Tales of Wood and Water." Its name was the Rose Plunkett. Are they related? Do you offer the Jiffy 22 in a 20 foot model? I would like a lobster boat small enough to trailer. You have a nice site. I saw it listed in Wooden Boat magazine. Thanks, Rick Klein

I have been looking at lobster boat designs for a while. You have done a great job with "Miss Rebecca". The website and video are great also. As an old college bar DJ, The Allman Brother's "Jesica" is my favorite upbeat tune, it works well. Los Gatos isn't a place for backyard boatbuilding, perhaps it is time to move over to Santa Cruz. Great job on the Lobster Boat. Being an old New Englander i can really appreciate the work you did. First Rate. You should go into business building that design. I like your attention to detail and leaving no "seam" unturned. Have fun with Miss Rebecca.

That may be the most beautiful boat I've ever seen. Now THAT is a boat! They can keep all those fiberglass, gee-whiz spaceship designs, I want one of these! Great work! Cheers! Rick...

Son Geoff is Naval Architec and ME. Designed me a 14' Bay/Flats boat. Hull made of epoxy/glass and topsides of Baltec balsa core. Powered by 40 hp 4 stroke Yamaha, speed with 1 POB is 44 mph. Built for shallow water running and flats fishing, 3' chop is no problem. Hull has just been popped out of new mold for production. Permanent topsides now being finished.

What a beautiful job you did on this boat! Wife and I are moving to Md Chesapeake bay area this summer. We are looking for a boat to build using plywood construction for fishing, cruising, etc. This one looks perfect. Looking at all your pics really explains a lot and gets me motivated. Can I ask what your construction schedule was like and roughly what was the cost minus engine? Also, Arch Davis mentions that this can be built as a fishing or cruising style? Thanks!! Mike

Gary I visited this site in Aug. 01. Miss Rebecca is a awfully pretty boat. How do you like your Cummins engine by now? Has it been trouble free and reliable? Do you have the weight of that engine as installed in the boat? We have a 26 ft Bartender With a gas engine and I am thinking of repowering with a light wt. diesel. Thanks for your help. Ron

Great job Gary! Your attention to detail is outstanding. Her lines are beautiful and she looks as if she stepped out of New England's past. I am curious as to total manhours you invested in her construction and rigging? I also would like to know the spec's on the Cummins if possible? I have looked at similar down east style plans but never the Jack Tar. After seeing your example I think I have settled on a design. Thanks!!

Gary, you have built a beautiful boat. Your attention to detail was phenomenal. I am planning to build a jack tar. Could you please send me the specs on horse power, cruising speed and top end speed that you used? How does it handle in rough water? Is there anything you would have done different or learned from that you would be willing to pass on? I would love to have you emial me back if you can with any answers or tips. Thank you, Matt P.S. Beautiful job. I grew up in Massachusetts, and worked on a 42' Bruno Stillman out of Glouchester harbor in the late 70's. I've had a love for Downeast designs ever since. I'm looking into building my own, in the trailerable range for leisure on Oklahoma lakes. I am now sold on this design. Excellent website also.
